The mitigation investigation involves thorough research into an individual's past and encompasses a comprehensive examination of his/her life, starting from early infancy and progressing through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood. It is an inquiry into one's experiences and  circumstances including upbringing, education, relationships, friendships, significant life events (both positive and negative), that led to the offense.  The significance of this investigation cannot be overstated.
